FREE Web Hosting There's so much cool stuff I've discovered for making amazing, free web pages. With a little time, and these few simple tips, you will have a page up in no time. First of all, where will this site be? If you have an AOL account, you can post your web site to an area called "my place" otherwise known as your FTP (file transfer protocol) space. You simply hold down the ctrl key and the k key at the same time, and a box will open, type: my place, and AOL will take you there. You can also get there by clicking Internet > FTP near the top of the browser. You get 2 megs of storage space per screen name on an AOL account. If you are not on AOL, and want a free web site host, I like Bravenet Free Hosting. There are others, but I really like Bravenet for many reasons. I like them because they are free at first, and if you want more space you can pay and upgrade. Other free hosts do not offer this, and you would have to move all your files to a new hosting provider just to upgrade. Bravenet also offers a blog journal. If you want to get started with your own blog, the Bravenet Journal is also available for free, so be sure to check out the many services they offer by clicking the banner below.
Uploading To A Free Web Host - Using a Free FTP program. There are many companies that allow you to host your site for free. Most of them put a little banner on your page, so they get some advertisement, and you get free web hosting. I tend to use Bravenet Free Hosting. It allows one to upload several files at once using an FTP program, making the whole thing very painless and fast. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which just means that it's a program to transfer your files from your computer to a web host. Just follow the instructions, and upload your index.html file with any .jpg or .gif files that belong on the page as well. Transfer the other .html pages as needed. If you want a free FTP program I suggest a program called CoffeeCup FREE FTP. An FTP program transfers all your html and jpg files into your free web host all at once instead of one file at a time, which can take a long time if you have a big site. When you work on sites a lot, you have to use an FTP program to get things done fast. |
