Setting Up POP Mail For Your New Dot Com in Outlook Express

If you have your own dot com up and running, and want to accept email at yourname@yourdot.com it's easy to set up, but you will need a little help from two different places. First you have to tell the folk who host your website that you want them to set up POP mail for your dot com. Tell them the name(s) you want and they will send you back a user name and password for each. They will also send you your "incoming mail server" needed for set up.

The folk who host your website will deliver your incoming email, but it's your local internet provider that deliver your outgoing mail. (if you think about it, it makes total sense). Whoever you pay for internet access, contact them and tell them you are setting up POP mail for your dot com, and that you want to know their outgoing smtp mail path so that you can set up your Outlook Express. This is normal stuff for them, and they will email you something that looks a little like this, smtp.comcast.net

So the first task is to shoot off the names you want set up to your hosting provider, then write or call your internet provider and ask them for their smtp path for outgoing email. Once you have these little tid-bits of info, the rest is easy!

Once your web host has provided you with user names and passwords, and your local internet provider has provided you with the smtp mail path, you are ready to set up Outlook Express to accept your email.

Click the START menu button in the bottom left of your screen, then click ALL PROGRAMS, and choose OUTLOOK EXPRESS.
Click Outlook Express

When Outlook Express opens, click TOOLS>ACCOUNTS...
Tools>Accounts...

When the Internet Accounts window opens up, choose the MAIL tab and click ADD>MAIL...
Mail Tab>Add>Mail...

Type your first and last name into the name field.
First & Last Name

Enter the new email address you are setting up- you@yourdot.com
you@yourdot.com

Your host will have provided you with your incoming mail server address, and more than likely it will just be yourdot.com (that's how my host sets up my pop emails, they just use my dot com). The bottom field can only be provided by your internet provider. Who ever bills you for net access will be the ones delivering your outgoing email. They will give you a little path that will look something like: smtp.comcast.net depending on who provides you with internet access. Fill the bottom field with the smtp path.

Your hosting provider has provided you with a User Name and Password for each POP email you are setting up. The user name may be different from the name you use in your email, make sure you enter your USER NAME into the top field, and enter the PASSWORD your host supplied into the bottom field. Check Remember Password so you can log on easily. Don't check the Log on using Secure Password Authentication unless you have a complex set up that requires all that. More than likely, you will not need that feature, so leave it unchecked.

Click FINISH... but there's one more step...
click finish

If this is your only email set up in Outlook Express, it will automatically set to DEFAULT, but if you have several, click on the new email account you just set up to highlight it, and click on the SET AS DEFAULT button on the right. Now all mail you send and receive will be through this new account.
Set as Default

Now to send and recieve email, simply open up Outlook Express and all your email will be in your INBOX. Outlook Express is a powerful email client, and you can set up an address book with all your email contacts. I even set up email rules to block spam, and it works great. Have fun checking out all the added features Outlook Express has, or just use it to send and receive emails as is.
