When I want to get a site to the top of the search lists, I search my favorite search engines, see who is already on top in the area I want placement in, and I analyze their site. To see any web site's meta tags, at the top of your browser click on View > Source. This will show you the html of any web site. Don't ever copy/paste their meta tags, just take notes, and when you make your site consider these notes. Your notes need to know how many text links were on the page, how many keywords were in the title, and how many keywords were text links...this is an easy way to see how each search engine accepts submissions.

Some people make a different "doorway" page that is set up to each search engine's specific criteria. Since all search engines have different ways of spidering web sites, if you are number 1 on Google, it doesn't mean you will be top at Yahoo. Take the time to be a detective, it pays!
